Price spread
Why the same shower is $9,000 from one company and $27,000 from another
The spread on identical scope is enormous, and it has almost nothing to do with the quality of the shower you end up with.
Get three quotes for the same shower replacement and you can easily see $9,000, $15,000 and $27,000. Same bathroom, same scope, same materials in some cases. Homeowners reasonably assume the expensive one must include something better. Usually it doesn’t.
What’s actually different
Roughly three things drive the spread, and only one of them is the bathroom.
Overhead
A company with a showroom, a call center, a sales team on commission, and heavy advertising has to recover all of it on every job. A two-crew local operation recovers far less. Neither is wrong. But on identical scope, that difference alone can be many thousands of dollars.
How they sell
The most expensive quotes in this industry often come from companies running a same-day-close sales model: a long in-home presentation, a price that drops if you sign tonight, financing arranged at the table. The discount is real. So is the fact that the opening number was built to survive it.
The actual work
This is the smallest of the three variables. The material cost difference between a good wall system and a premium one is real but measured in hundreds to low thousands — not in the $18,000 gap between your cheapest and most expensive quote.
On identical scope, the top of the market isn’t selling you a better bathroom. It’s selling you the same bathroom through a more expensive machine.

How to tell which one you’re holding
Compare line items, not totals. Put the quotes side by side and check each for:
- Demolition and disposal, stated separately
- What happens behind the wall, and what repair costs if they find damage
- Waterproofing method, named
- Who does the plumbing and under what license
- Warranty: length, coverage, who administers it
- Total days on site and crew size
Two quotes with identical line items and a $12,000 difference tell you everything you need to know. So do two quotes where the cheap one has half the lines blank.
What to do with the expensive quote
You don’t need to argue with it. You need a second and third itemized quote to compare it against. Companies that price at the top of the market rely on being the only number a homeowner ever sees, presented in a single sitting, with pressure to decide that evening.
The single most effective thing you can do is take the written quote, keep it, and get another one. Any company confident in its pricing will expect that.
